About Solana Lamports

A lamport is the base unit of the Solana native token. Every on-chain balance, rent reserve, and transaction fee is stored as an unsigned 64-bit integer count of lamports. One SOL equals 1,000,000,000 lamports (10⁹), so SOL has nine decimal places — nothing finer than a single lamport exists on-chain.

Deep Dive into Lamport Accounting

Rent and the rent-exempt threshold

Every Solana account pays rent proportional to its data size. The runtime calculates the rent-exempt minimum as roughly two years of rent prepaid in lamports. A 0-byte account sits near 890,880 lamports, while a standard 128-byte SPL token account lands at about 2,039,280 lamports. Accounts below the threshold are subject to garbage collection, so most dApps pay the full exemption up front during account creation.

Transaction fee model and priority fees

Base fees are 5,000 lamports per signature, paid to the leader validator. Since the 1.14 runtime, compute-unit priority fees layer on top: you declare a price in micro-lamports per compute unit, and the scheduler orders transactions by total bid. A transaction burning 200,000 CUs at 10,000 micro-lamports/CU costs an extra 2,000 lamports above the signature fee — small in absolute terms, large when multiplied across a bot workload.

SPL tokens have their own decimals

Lamports measure native SOL only. SPL tokens like USDC declare a separate decimals value in their mint account (USDC uses 6, BONK uses 5). Converting SPL balances requires dividing the raw amount by 10**decimals — do not reuse the lamport scale for these tokens or you will be off by many orders of magnitude.

Real-world Integration

A wallet balance UI pulls the raw lamports field from a getBalance RPC call and displays it as SOL. When that number looks suspicious — say, the user expected a rent refund — pasting the lamport value here gives an instant SOL view without firing up a debugger. Airdrop and reward scripts usually receive a target amount in SOL from operations, but the SPL transfer instruction expects an unsigned 64-bit lamport integer. Convert once here, paste the exact integer into your script, and you avoid a class of off-by-one-billion bugs that slip past code review. Keepers computing priority fees can verify the price tier quickly — 1,000 micro-lamports/CU over a 200k-CU compute budget equals 200,000 micro lamports, or 200 lamports, which is 0.0000002 SOL.

During incident response, a failing insufficient funds for rent error usually means an account dropped below the rent-exempt minimum after a partial withdrawal. Compute the exemption with this tool, compare against the account balance returned by the RPC, and the deficit is obvious.
